New iPhone app finds free WiFi on 20,000 locations

Makayama Software (www.makayama.com), announced a new iPhone application today that allows users to find open WiFi hotspots and make free data connections on their phone or laptop, anywhere, anytime. In the US and Europe, there's a free hotspot on almost every streetcorner. This app helps to find them quickly, using the built-in GPS of the iPhone.

Amsterdam, March 13, 2009 - The data are provided by Hotspotr.com and Free-hotspot.com, two of the largest global repositories of free WiFi hotspots. It doesn't depend on WiFi scanning, which would limit the range to only 25 yards, but uses GPS to pinpoint all known hotspots up to 10 miles away. All the hotspot locations are locally stored on the iPhone, and GPS usage is also free, so no expensive data roaming is needed. When abroad, users of the software may save hundreds of dollars in roaming cost, because they can always find a free data connection for their laptop or iPhone.

The software, called 'Free WiFi', leads users to the nearest of 20,000 free wireless hotspots worldwide with the touch of a button, making it the ideal WiFi-tool for frequent travellers and mobile professionals. The app shows the nearest free hotspots, provides directions on Google Maps, and shows additional information, such as the hotspot provider, phone number and website. You can browse the full database manually by country and city, or choose to automatically show results based on your location.

The added free hotspots from Hotspotr and free-hotspot.com include chains such as Starbucks and Panera in the US and thousands of hotels, bars and cafs in Europe. Free-hotspot.com certifies that all their operated hotspots are open and includes a free access option. The data provided by Hotspotr are gathered by a large community of users.

"This app will let you get your mail or surf the web as quickly as possible, without having to pull your creditcard. " said Vincent Verweij, CEO of Makayama. "The tens of thousands of free hotspots across the US and Europe enables our users to find and utilize the nearest Wi-Fi connection wherever they are."
